1. Overview of discipline

The first-level PhD program for chemical engineering and technology has the right to confer the Master of Engineering. The subject is derived from daily chemical, greasy chemical, industrial fermentation, fine chemical and relevant majors. The fine chemical master program was among master programs of the first batch approved by the State Council in 1981 and the fine chemical major was listed as ministry-level key subject in 1988. The PhD program of applied chemistry was established in 2005 and the first-level PhD program for chemical engineering and technology was established in 2010. After the school running for several years, it has fostered thousands of senior professional talents for the light chemical field inChina, particularly fine chemical, daily chemical, surfactant and related industries. Thus, it is called the cradle of talents in the light chemical industry inChina. Now there are 103 teachers in this program. 24% of them are professors, 55.3% of them are associate professors, 75.7% of them are PhD and 43.7% of them have the experience of oversea study for six months or longer. Three teachers are distinguished professor of China Thousand Talents Program, one teacher is funded by The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one teacher is the national candidate of New Century Million Talents Project, four teachers are listed in the New Century Talents Program of Ministry of Education and 23 teachers are listed in Jiangsu Talents Program. In addition, an innovation group of Jiangsu universities has been set up. The subject relies on the Talent Recruitment Base, 111 Program of Ministry of Education, Joint International Research Center of Light-response Functional Molecular Materials, Key Lab of Colloid in Foods and Biotechnology (Ministry of Education), Jiangsu Engineering Technical Research Center of Industrial Chromatograph and other platform, focuses on colloid and interface chemistry in biomass processing, special separation engineering in biomass processing, oriented conversion of biomass resources to functional fine chemicals, integrated quality and safety assessment technology of biomass products, fundamental research and application development of materials chemistry and other scientific issues and defines the discipline orientation that is distinct from and surpasses competitors in China.

2. Educational objectives

Establish the correct political direction, observe laws and disciplines, have good moral characters, learning attitude and team spirit.

Master the broad fundamental theories solidly, systematic special knowledge deeply and practical skills; know the development trend of subject and conditions of frontier fields, use theories of the subject and related subjects and experiment skills to complete topics that keeps up with forefront of the subject or have innovations independently, have the competency of independent research and teaching in the fields of the subject and service to economic development, and have the competency of self-improvement and innovation.

Master one foreign language to read data and lecture of this major and write the abstract of dissertation in foreign language and have the basic competency of international academic exchange

4. Program duration

The program lasts for 3 years. PhD candidates will spend minimum 3.5 years at school. The maximum duration shall not exceed 5 years (or 6 years for on-job PhD candidates).

5. Credit requirements and curriculum

There are general courses, required courses, degree courses and optional courses. The total credits of these courses must be 18 at least. All of general courses and required courses are compulsory. Select two degree courses.

PhD candidates that once studied in other majors or have the education background equal to postgraduate must study 3 to 4 postgraduate degree courses. And no credits are given.

Reading presentation. Under the tutor's guidance, PhD candidates must give four academic presentations (including dissertation proposal) in front of teaching staff after reading a certain number of literature, information and data related to the major and the research areas for the academic dissertation research. Give 2 credits. The score is determined by tutor group together.

6. Methods and requirements of education and assessment and requirements of academic dissertation

Refer to the PhD Education Program of Jiangnan University for details.

The Program will be enforced for postgraduates admitted in 2014 and later. The power of interpretation shall be vested in the School of Chemistry and Material Engineering.
